Shampoooo
The most basic part of our craft… but the biggest impact.. the Wash.
Most clients claim that its their most favorite part of their service. No doubt right?! This is when they get to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Closed eyes, deep breaths, hot water, aromatherapy, massage… and ultimately the feeling that they are being taken care of. Even when we are crunched for time, we can still deliver a top notch experience.
But its not always so simple. When not done properly it can effect the outcome of your color or styling. When we don’t have a method it can feel disjointed and the client can feel like we are not in control.
Nailing this will set you up for success because it shows attention to detail, level or care, and anticipating the needs of the client.
Step by Step:
Give the client a fresh clean robe
Brush the hair out if needed. Focus on the scalp to start the exfoliation process (can be done at chair or bowl)
Place some drops of oil on your palms, rub together and hover hands over clients face and instruct them to take three deep breaths. (this can be cut for time, or if client declines)
Thoroughly wet the hair with very warm water (should be almost “hot” but still on the warm side)
Using the best New Wash Formula, place at the roots. (not using enough will result in the hair not feeling clean, greasy, and limp)
Using the scrubby brush start at the middle of the front hairline and use slow heavy handed circles or moving back n forth. Move methodically through the hair exfoliating and massaging the product into the scalp.
Now that the scalp is thoroughly cleansed, you can work the New Wash through the mid lengths and ends.
This is the time to give a great head massage, don’t forget the neck!
Rinsing out New Wash is just as important as all the other steps. If not rinsed out properly the hair will feel greasy and heavy. Using your fingers as you rinse like you are wiping the New Wash off the roots. You really can’t rinse enough.
I like to shake out the hair and give it a good wring out.
Then wrap the hair up in a towel… no dripping while they walk to the chair. (I like to place the towel first over their forehead and place my hands gently over their forehead, apply a bit of pressure and take a breath. gives them a moment of pause to conclude the wash)
Direct them to walk back to the chair while you wipe down the sink and clean up.
